Conceived as a shrine to playful and powerful women, Londubh designed and executed this one-of-a-kind ceiling across 26 individual panels in their studio using acrylic and black-light activated fluorescent paints, textured plaster, and 22 and 23-carat gold leaf. The endeavour took approximately 2,000 hours to complete before being shipped to site for installation by Red Horse Constructors. Explore the details and process in full.

For as long as Londubh exists, one of the greatest highlights will be Team Nicole Hollis sharing an image of Yves Saint Laurent's red salon at Villa Oasis, his home in Marrakech, and being told this would serve as the inspiration for this office and record library. As artists, what greater challenge could there be than to conceive and execute painted details worthy of such a style icon, the poetic boldness of the clients, and music history. The assignment: bring designs to life across the ceiling medallion and beams, pocket doors, wainscotting, fabric trim, and drawer faces.

On the ceiling over the painted, vintage wood-panelled craft room floor sits this custom textured plaster ceiling, applied between beams of shou sugi ban wood. Patterned after traditional Moroccan design, the assignment called for every element to line up evenly with the surrounding beams and fixtures. One overhead light, already positioned off the grid, prevented the pattern from aligning precisely around it, which called for an imaginative solution typical of Londubh, one that wove together every element of the room, as well as the homeowners' love for the Grateful Dead.

Londubh Studio has a knack for understanding when a space needs a masterpiece versus when the perfect backdrop will do to celebrate the existing masterpieces. This powder room, clad in Pink Onyx by Coor Italia, including a custom carved sink and moulding, as well as the most jaw-dropping artistry by David Wiseman and fixtures by Van Cronenburg, merely needed the right technique and tone to unify it all. Gilding the ceiling in 22-carat rose gold was the solution.

The design and placement for this all-encompassing retro mural were entirely the work of Team Nicole Hollis, with Londubh adding its own signature shimmer and precision. Choosing the colours was a group effort. The 23-carat gold leaf line work marked Londubh's fondest farewell to this dream project, its final installation over seven months of pure joy and inspiration.
